Physician Assistant
Description
Position Summary
The Physician Assistant (PA) is an integral member of the Shkagamik-Kwe Health Centre interprofessional team, working under the supervision of the Lead Physician and in collaboration with other health professionals to provide high-quality, culturally safe, patient-centred care. The PA supports SKHC’s holistic Woven Blanket Model of Care, which integrates western medical practice with Traditional Indigenous teachings and healing practices.
The PA will assist in assessment, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and health education for clients, with a focus on improving access to primary care and supporting overall community wellness.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care
- Conduct patient histories, physical examinations, and routine assessments under the direction of the Lead Physician.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests, laboratory investigations, and imaging, consistent with scope of practice and delegated medical directives.
- Provide treatment, prescriptions, and follow-up care in accordance with medical directives and clinical guidelines.
- Support chronic disease management, preventative care, and wellness planning.
- Document patient encounters accurately and completely in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
Collaboration & Teamwork
- Work closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, traditional healers, and allied health professionals to ensure coordinated care.
- Participate in case conferences, team rounds, and integrated care planning.
- Collaborate with Traditional Practitioners to support cultural practices and holistic approaches to health.
Health Promotion & Education
- Provide health education, counselling, and resources to clients and families to support informed decision-making and self-management.
- Participate in SKHC wellness programs, outreach, and community initiatives.
Quality & Compliance
- Adhere to SKHC’s policies, medical directives, and protocols, as well as professional standards established by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) and the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA).
- Contribute to continuous quality improvement, accreditation activities, and evaluation of patient outcomes.
- Maintain confidentiality, privacy, and ethical standards in accordance with PHIPA and Indigenous cultural protocols.
Qualifications
- Graduate of a recognized Physician Assistant education program (BScPA or equivalent).
- Current certification and membership in good standing with CAPA.
- Demonstrated clinical experience in a primary care or community health setting preferred.
- Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and determinants of health, with a commitment to providing culturally safe and trauma-informed care.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in EMR systems and computer literacy.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, as required.
Working Conditions
- Based at Shkagamik-Kwe Health Centre in Sudbury, with potential outreach to surrounding First Nation communities.
- Direct patient care in clinic and community settings.
- Participation in rotating on-call or after-hours coverage may be required, in coordination with the Lead Physician.
Additional Assets (Preferred)
- Experience working in Indigenous health organizations or with Indigenous communities.
- Ability to communicate in Anishinaabemowin or French.
- Training in cultural safety, trauma-informed practice, and/or harm reduction approaches.
